The Medical Alarm System Explained

The medical alarm system consists of three parts:

1. The transmitter (a button to press on a pendant or bracelet) 
2. the medical alert base unit (speaker box)
3. the medical alert system monitoring and response center

The transmitter

If you need help you push the button on the transmitter unit you are wearing. This can be a medical alarm pendant worn hanging around your neck, a medical alarm watch worn on your wrist or a medical alarm device clipped to your belt. One push of the emergency medical alarm button will activate the monitored medical alarm system. The help buttons can also be worn in the shower or the tub.

The Speaker Box or Medical Alert Base Unit

Once the button is pressed, it contacts the speaker box (base unit) that is connected to your telephone line and an electrical power outlet.

The Speaker Box (base unit) is activated and automatically dials the monitoring center. systemThis will open a direct line of communication between the monitoring and response center and your home and within 30 to 40 seconds an operator from the monitoring center will speak to you through the Speaker Box. The base unit contains a sensitive microphone and a powerful loudspeaker that allow conversation to take place between the distressed caller and the operator.

The Response 

The operator listens to what the caller has to say, assesses the situation, and then makes an appropriate response. It may be necessary to call emergency personnel in response to an accident or medical problem, but it may simply be a request to call a relative. If needed the operator will continue to talk until help arrives.  Once help is on its way another operator will call family and friends on a pre-arranged list to let them know what is happening.

If you are unable to answer the call from the operator the monitoring center will still send help straight away.

Medical alarm monitoring is a vital part of the system and a good monitoring system must provide a fast, friendly and flexible service to the caller.
